A Future Free From Violence Starts with All of Us

Change begins when people choose not to stand on the sidelines. Together we can create safety, healing and change for generations to come.

By leaving a legacy or donating today, you become part of a community working towards a future where people are safe, respected, connected and able to thrive.

When people think about sexual violence or family harm, they often imagine a single moment of crisis.

What they don’t see is everything that comes next.

The teenager trying to get through school after being harmed

The parent rebuilding confidence after years of control

The child learning that home can be safe

The family or whānau working to break a cycle that has existed for generations

Every day, people across our communities take the difficult first step towards safety, healing and hope. We walk alongside them through that journey.

Behind every story of strength is someone who believed in their story and, in their future.

Healing Matters.
Prevention Matters Too.

At Tautoko Mai we respond after harm has occurred, like many other organisations.

But we also believe something equally important:

The best response to violence is preventing it from happening in the first place.

Your support helps us work with schools, young people, families, workplaces, and communities to build healthier relationships, challenge harmful behaviours, and create environments where violence is less likely to occur.

Because every person who NEVER experiences harm is a life changed forever.

The Impact Goes Further Than You Think

When one person receives support, the impact rarely stops with them.

A young person who receives help today may grow into a parent who raises children differently.

A survivor who finds safety may help others seek support.

A family that learns new ways of relating can change the future for generations.

The effects of violence ripple through communities. So does healing.

Why Community Support Matters

Demand for support after harm continues to grow.

People need access to services when they are ready. It could be immediately, weeks, months or sometimes years later.

They need prevention programmes before harm occurs.

They need skilled professionals who understand trauma, safety, culture, and recovery.

Government funding helps, but it doesn’t cover everything needed to meet the growing demand for support and prevention.

Community donations give us the flexibility to respond where the need is greatest and invest in the work that creates lasting change.

We are deeply appreciative not only of the financial assistance, but also of the trust and belief you have shown in our mission. Acts of generosity like yours remind us that our work is valued and that our community stands alongside survivors.

Families navigating the aftermath of harm impacting someone close to them is a difficult challenge.

Where we can lend a hand

We provide support to all ages and all ethnicities. We provide support to our clients and their family/whanau in the Bay of Plenty region and in the Waikato both in our offices and in the community.

We receive referrals from clients directly, or from multiple agencies and organisations, including the Police, Ministry of Children/Oranga Tamariki, ACC, Community Groups, GP’s and Schools.

OUR SUPPORT SERVICE

What will your legacy be used for

We receive government funding for our services which are provided free of charge to people in need.

Funding, however, does not cover all the needs of the community, and particularly those parts of our community which are more venerable or more remote.

Government funding is also focused on addressing harmful impacts while not primarily focusing on prevention. Any legacy gifts received will be used for one of the following services:

1

Prevention training for various groups (children, adolescents, caregivers, other agencies, etc.) to help them.

2

Logistics support to clients with services in remote locations or to get to support centers.

3

Physical spaces for clients such as accessible counselling and medical spaces.

4

Therapeutic services that are under resourced by current funding, this includes medical services, after-hour services, counselling and social support, children focused services and disabled services.

5

Group activities focused on the family of victims to help them to support and heal as a family/whanau

6

Increasing the organisation capacity to support complex client needs that make it harder to get the benefit of short- and long-term crisis support.

A Legacy Grounded in Generosity

The generous donation of $560,000 in 2018 has had a lasting and transformative impact on our organisation and the children and families we support in Whakatāne. Through this remarkable gift, we were able to establish a permanent property that now serves as a dedicated base for our services in the region.

Having a permanent location has significantly strengthened our ability to deliver services locally. The property provides dedicated counselling, meeting, and support areas that enable us to offer services more effectively while ensuring a positive and comfortable experience for those seeking help.

This generosity has delivered important ongoing financial benefits for the organisation. By reducing ongoing accommodation costs and providing long-term certainty, resources that would otherwise be spent on lease t can instead be directed towards frontline services and support for children and families. This strengthens the sustainability of our services and helps ensure that support remains available for future generations in the Whakatāne and wider Eastern Bay community.

Most importantly, this donation has created a lasting legacy, increasing accessibility to essential services and demonstrating a long-term commitment to the wellbeing of local children and families. The impact of this gift will continue to be felt for many years, helping us provide care, support, and hope to those who need it most.

Supporting a family through a difficult time

“We all wanted to help, but nobody knew what to do.”

Families navigating the aftermath of harm impacting someone close to them is a difficult challenge.

Everyone in the family responds differently. Parents are worried about saying the wrong thing. Siblings struggle to understand what is happening. Conversations can end in frustration, and tensions within the household grow.

Through counselling, information and support, families gain a better understanding of trauma and how they can support one another. They learn practical ways to communicate, respond during difficult moments and work together through challenges.
Over time, the household becomes calmer. Family members feel more confident supporting one another, and the person most affected by the harm no longer carries the burden alone.

Families feel better equipped to navigate difficult situations together.

“We realised we didn’t need to have all the answers. We just needed to learn how to support each other.”
